Q&A with the inspiring mama Amber Baker, founder of the health & wellness brand Collective 108
What inspired you to start Collective 108?
After I turned 34 I started getting hormonal ache and I was unable to find anything that would help my skin clear up, so I started creating my Oil Cleansing blend. It worked amazingly & I felt inspired to share it! At the same time me and my husband Nicholas and I had been playing with the idea of starting a health and wellness business. The two things seemed to go together naturally so my husband and I went to work sourcing the cleanest ingredients we could find, sustainable packaging and creating the brand from the ground up.
I have always been drawn to being of service to others, I am a Yoga Teacher, Massage Therapist and a Postpartum Doula as well. Having a platform where I can share healthy & encouraging information and product seemed like a natural transition for me. Since I am a creative marketer by trade in the health & wellness world, conceptualizing the brand has been really fun! Being able to create organic, clean products for people that work and that don’t cost an arm and a leg feels good!
How important is the community and where you set up the brand?
I feel like San Diego is a great place for entrepreneurs in the health and wellness niche. There are tons of cool networking groups and a nice sense of “collaboration over competition” here as well. I am really happy to be able to launch here and since I had already been working in the health and wellness scene here for years it was so perfect to be here.
What advice would you give to other Mama’s thinking of starting a business?
If you are just starting I highly recommend checking out what networking groups and events are happening around you & don’t be shy about reaching out to those you admire in the community! Use social media to the fullest when it comes to connecting – and try to enjoy the process!
What are some of the challenges you have had to overcome while owning a business & being a Mom?
Sourcing good, clean ingredients is harder than one would think! And just deciding on all the little things like packaging and logos took longer than I thought it would but we are so happy with how everything turned out in the end. One of the biggest challenges for me was (and still is) is balancing home life, my freelance marketing jobs + building Collective 108.
Managing being a mother, wife + entrepreneur is tricky. So, finding the time for everything and separating work/home is for sure challenging as well as fully trusting my instincts when it comes to creating for myself vs creating for a freelance client.
Scheduling out every day and making sure I am leaving time for myself has been key in maintaining balance.
Tell us more about Collective 108, what is it all about?
Collective 108 is an online shop all about being mindful, minimal, healthy & happy. We specialize in health and wellness products that have clean ingredients & that are ultra effective. We also want to use our platform to inspire the community & bring like minded people together. We are known for our organic face oils and CBD products. I mix the organic face oils in small batches myself & they have helped so many with things like cystic acne, eczema, scarring & dry skin. Since they are safe to use on babies & while pregnant lots of mamas love the Organic Skin Serum on pregnant bellies and to soothe their babies’ sensitive skin after they are born. We also have beautiful crystal Gua Sha tools that pair amazingly with our Serum.
Our black label CBD line has two products right now. One is our Full Spectrum CBD drops that are amazing for things like anxiety, insomnia, pain & inflammation. We also have a Nano CBD muscle rub that is an idea for soothing sore muscles, tendons and soothing inflammation. The rub is special because the nano CBD in it absorbs past your skin into the muscle area that needs it most. We also have Nano CBD pills if you prefer to take a pill vs a tincture.
Some things that set us apart are the minimal ingredients, all of which you can pronounce and understand. We never add any fragrances, fillers, parabens or dyes and we are fair trade and cruelty free. Our CBD drops are full spectrum and are the highest milligrams (1500mg) at a lower price than most. We want to make it affordable for people since its such an effective supplement. We also publish all of our third party test results so that we can be as transparent as possible.
I am proud we can keep our products clean & affordable while maintaining professional integrity. These days more than ever it is really easy to just slap a label on something you didn’t research, or test and call it a day. You won’t find us doing that.
